The Story of a Daybed

It all started as a PDF printed out from a website... just plans on paper.

Then it turned into a pile of wood taking up a parking spot in our garage.

The wood was cut and sanded, and the nuts and bolts were purchased- then the project moved from the garage to the bedroom where it would finally reside.

Much hammering and assembling later, a bed was created- the top bunk of the bunkbed plans, minus the front railing, and a trundle bed that fits under it, on wheels.

Handles were attached to the trundle:

The primer was applied:

The bed was painted. The mattresses were purchased and picked up.

And, the only part of the project I was involved in- bedding was selected to match the curtains and the future color of the room.

And, we have a daybed!!

I've been told, that in furniture advertisements, dogs are often included to make it look homey:

In actuality, the dog isn't usually lying on the rug while we're sitting on the bed. He usually looks like this:

The above photo also illustrates one of the primary purposes of the bed- seating for watching movies where we had none previously. Well, we had 1 chair. Remember the chair? It's freecycled now.

And we've got much better seating. And sleeping space for guests! TWO beds! Who wants to come visit now?

My husband never ceases to impress me. He jumped from his first woodworking project to this huge one*. He's amazing.

* and built me a grow light set-up and a cake stand for my sister in-between, but I hesitate to call those projects, since he used leftover wood and they each took an afternoon.

That looks like a good place to spend a day home sick from work. You could fill the storage area underneath with cans of chicken soup and old movies.

Matt:
1) I'm not sick, even if it sounds like it, as you hear me coughing from across the office all day. Not sick. I feel fine! Can I go out to play?! Please? (Do I sound like a 4 year old trying to avoid being stuck in bed?)

2)The bottom "storage area" is a trundle bed, which means it's already full of a mattress, no room for chicken soup. Old movies are being stored in the closet of the bedroom. Games are being stored on shelves next to the bed.

I count 3 Scrabbles in there.

Does that box on the bottom say "Bible Trivia II"? Just the thought of playing the sequel to a bible trivia game makes me feel sleepy. It's probably good you have the day bed right there, in case anybody passes out while trying to recall details from Numbers or Leviticus.

You should come by and see the playset he helped set up for Kevin and KAden! Thanks Josh!

Wow your daybed is so cool! What a wonderful MIFS project. Your husband did an outstanding job. And I love the dog-added-into-the-project photo.

Oh, man. I missed this post when I was out of the office after Jonah's birth. I'm glad there was a link to it in a later post. I hope I'm not too far behind in the comments.

The daybed looks great. With the trundle bed, it makes a really good use of space, doesn't it?

How were the plans? Were they easy to follow? We may need to rethink the sleeping arrangements for our two boys once they're in big boy beds. I'd be interested to know how the construction went.
