Going (Really) Unplugged

The last time Josh and I went on a vacation that was more than just a long weekend, it was to Georgia with my parents to visit my grandparents. That was over a year ago. We're ready for another break!

We're leaving Saturday for a road trip! We're camping along the way- the first couple nights at Niagara Falls, a couple more in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and most of the rest of the nights in Maine near Acadia National Park. Oh my, I can't wait.

We figure, it will be a long while before we'll be able to do another trip with multiple 8+ hour drives and many nights in a row sleeping in a tent, so this is our opportunity to get it out of our system. Also, we can't wait to see this part of the country, where neither of us has been. I'm coming home with a LOT of pictures. Brace yourselves.

I'm a little nervous about this 10-days-camping thing. I mean, I think 2 nights- maybe 3- is the most I've ever done. I expect we'll get really good at cooking over a fire and setting up the tent. Also, I'm praying for good weather- a long camping trip in the rain would be no fun. I'll also be more "unplugged" than I've been in a long time this week- not only unplugged from the Internet, but even without electricity! None of the sites we've reserved have electric hookups. So, don't let anything exciting happen while I'm gone.

Any tips on what to see or where to go in these areas? At Niagara Falls, we'll have to stay on the US side since we don't have passports (I know, I know). Besides that, we have an open schedule. What should we plan?

OH! SO fun! What a great idea. I looove that part of the country. We went on a two+ week trip for my high school graduation back in the day. You will love it.

Some recommendations:
::Bar Harbor, ME (right outside Arcadia NP - quaint, great, local restaurants)
::Montpelier, VT - I don't remember how far out of the way this would be for you, but I loved this city. "Our" kinda people live there :)
::We did Niagara on the Canadian side and come back through the Thousand Islands area of upstate NY, which was unbelievable. I don't know if that would be on the way for you, but it was amazing. I keep trying to get back there.
::Wineries in upstate NY were loads of fun. The baby cramps that a bit, but they were pretty to visit, and you could be the DD (plus, a few sips won't hurt!)
::If I was anywhere in the neighborhood, I'd definitely hit up Moosewood, but that's just me! :)

Have SO much fun! We went to the mountains of NC for our "babymoon," and it was wonderful in every way!

So much fun!!! I am jealous; maybe we should do a similar trip. :-) I've never been to that part of the country too. We should go, and go into Canada, so we can get some more stamps in our passports. ;-) (And you should get one! Hehe You should go visit Tree in the DR!)

You will just love Maine! Chris and I spent our honeymoon in/around Acadia and we didn't want to come home again. The views are just breathtaking. Be sure to hike up a mountain in Acadia - there are lots with 3-4 hour round trip hikes. There's nothing like coming back from a vacation being able to say that you climbed a mountain.

You will have to go back so you can see the falls from the Canadian side. It is much better from over there. We ate at a restaurant right on the falls with the kids (baby/toddler age). On the way back from Canada they thought we were selling the boys. We didn't have ID for them. Note to self...get some sort of ID for your child. Kevin and Kaden wee so little/scared that they wouldn't say that we WERE in fact their parents when the border security people asked. What a hassle and scare. Have you checked into the turnaround time for getting a passport?

That sounds fantastic! I can't wait to hear about it. We're debating whether we wanna go to Niagara. Johnny doesn't have a passport (and neither do I, eep!) and I don't know if that alone is worth the hassle. But we DO want to go on cruises and stuff in the future, so I dunno.

ANYWAY if you find yourself heading home via I-70 and are swinging south of Pittsburgh, you need to get in touch! I will email you my phone number.

Passport turnaround time is 4-6 weeks uness you pay to get it expedited. It took us 4 weeks to get passports for Savannah and me. So yeah, you'll have to be content for now with seeing the Canadian falls. :-)

Kacie - if you are thinking you want to go on a cruise, then you can just get a passport card which are much cheaper. If you're planning to fly or drive anywhere outside the US you'll need a passport book (which also works for cruises). Also, Johnny's passport will only last 5 years, so I wouldn't get him one unless you know for sure you'll want it in the next 5 years.

At the US side of Niagara Falls do "Cave of the Winds", not "Maid of the Mist." Cave of the Winds lets you walk down onto some decks under the falls. It's pretty cool (and wet!). Maid of the Mist is just boring, in my opinion. :)
