American Hero in Africa

I learned something today. President Ulysses S Grant is revered as a hero in the West African nation of Guinea-Bissau. There was a very old statue of him there, and someone stole it and broke it into pieces, and Grant's head is still missing.

Wikipedia doesn't list this statue, but they should. It's way more interesting than Grant County, Indiana.

I'd love to go to the city Bolama, stay in the Sahara hotel, and learn more about how a 17th-century general came to be a hero in a very small African country. It's all so random, and unexpected.
