Scratch-and-Dent Appliances

A week ago, after work, we went appliance-shopping. I know, super-exciting news. Specifically, we were looking for a washer and dryer for our new house, which we'll (officially!) be moving into during the first week of November.

We had wandered around hhGregg, Lowes, and Sears in the past, casually looking for ideas, price shopping, and talking about what we wanted in appliances. By my dad's suggestion, while at Sears, we asked about 'scratch and dent' appliances- appliances that were damaged, usually just cosmetically, during shipping, so they couldn't be sold at full price on the sales floor. The saleslady we asked told us about a central warehouse store in Indianapolis where all the damaged appliances were sent from all the Sears stores in the area, and gave us directions. We were delighted!

So, last Friday, we made the trek to the store, and were pleasantly surprised. The selection of models for the washers and dryers were as good as the typical Sears stores, but the prices were much more palatable. They happened to be having a 1/2 off dryer sale, so we ended up picking out a washer and dryer that, together, cost less than the dryer would have un-scratched. These are new, not used, appliances, so we're getting the same quality as if we spent full price at a retail store. The only downside: a few scratches to the paint on the front and sides of the appliances. I can handle that.

If anyone comes to visit my home and judges me based on the condition of my washer and dryer, that's their problem, not mine. I rest in the knowledge that we got new, higher-quality appliances than we would have otherwise, that will probably last us longer, as frugally as possible.

I love shopping at scratch and dent stores! I unfortunately did not learn of this great tool until after I had purchased a full price stove and refrigerator for my new home (which came with NO appliances). But the washer, dryer and microwave all came from the scratch and dent store and I spent less on all three of these appliances than I did on just the stove!!!

Congratulations on your new home!

We bought our washer and dryer from Sears Scratch and Dent, too.

Ooh, thanks for the tip! I'll have to remember to ask about that when it's time for us to get a house with a dryer hook-up. :-)

And I'll have to come see your new home and make fun of your washer/dryer... :-)

What color are the appliances? Could you paint the scratches?

Joanna-- My husband and I are new to Indiana and also looking for new appliances for our home. Any chance you can divulge the name of the store where you found your good deals? Thanks!

The store is the Sears Appliance Warehouse- though it doesn't show up when you search for Indianapolis-area Sears stores on the Sears site. It is located on the west side of Indianapolis, just inside 465 on Crawfordsville Road.

You've been meaning to find out more about home appliances, but weren't sure where to start searching. Look no further! It's all available here.

It's actually the 'Sears Outlet' at 6022 Crawfordsville road.

I thought the selection was good, but the prices not much better than going to an HHGreg. You would find most washers about $550-$700! Not much of a deal if you ask me.

However, I am guessing bartering is welcome here...

We bought our Frigidaire Professional Gallery Series fridge from there. An $1800 fridge for $600. Small dent in the bottom right corner of the door. Sounds like a good deal to me! We are very pleased with everything we have ever bought from Sears Outlet! :)
