Shopping Local: Beyond food

Short thoughts for the evening:

Lately, we've had our mind on house-things. One of the things we will need to get for our house is a light fixture. Simple, right? We checked out the choices at Lowes, and saw a few we liked, but decided to hold off selecting one until we could get a good idea of what exact size we would be needing.

While out and about tonight, we drove past a local light fixtures store. Josh made the comment, he would like to go in and look around, to support local small business. When I think "shopping local", my mind first goes to "food miles," but shopping for locally-made products that aren't edible is just as valid a pursuit. Supporting the local economy rather than chain-store executives somewhere is something I need to consider more widely than just in my grocery shopping.
